FAQ
It is a vertical position between the mother’s breasts or the father’s chest (any family member can carry the baby), with the face sideways and the arms and legs in frog position. The baby should be held 24 hours a day in kangaroo position and only be removed from it to be changed and while feeding. During the night the caregiver must sleep in a semi-sitting position.
  • Take the baby out of the chest for something different to feeding or changing the diaper.
  • Lay the baby horizontally.
  • Wrap the baby or put buttons on him/her belly button.
  • Use baby pacifier.
  • Bathe the baby traditionally. Immerse him/her in water.
  • Put bracelets or other objects on their wrist or arms.
  • Give food other than breast milk or as indicated by the pediatrician.
  •
  • Use of a hat permanently to avoid heat loss, sleeveless shirt open on front, diaper, “skates” or socks. If you use cloth diapers you can wash them with coconut soap like the rest of the clothes and rinse it with plenty of water and a few drops of vinegar. Do not iron them, this way you will avoid skin irritations.
  • For now it is not necessary to bathe him/her. However, you have to clean their buttocks every time they urinate or make bowel movements. This can be done with a cotton damped with warm water.
  • Breast milk is and always will be the best food for your child. The baby should eat every hour and a half during the day and every two hours at night (depending on age).
  • In the Kangaroo Mother Care Program you will receive training on breastfeeding. It includes knowing the different positions to breastfeed your baby and what can be done to avoid pain and bleeding in the nipples.
  • For now remember that the most appropriate position to breastfeed your baby is  one in which your back is not injured and it does not cause pain in the nipples.
  • If you want to have a successful breastfeeding you should never use pacifier nor feeding bottles for feeding the baby. If the pediatrician decides to formulate a supplement, you should always supply it with a dropper, syringe, teaspoon or glass, in order to not interfere with the development of the baby’s sucking reflexes.
  • Avoid the consumption of coffee, cigarettes, soda and chili among others. And remember to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

It is the best gift of life! Learning to enjoy breastfeeding and assume it as a bonding experience is vital in the development of your newborn baby. Breastfeeding is not only the best way to feed and protect your newborn against diseases, but it is a privileged time for the mother and the baby to discover and adapt to each other.

  • For a successful breastfeeding it is very important:
  • The desire of the mother to breastfeed.
  • Early contact between the mother and her newborn.
  • A good position of the baby in the breast.
  • The tranquility of the mother when breastfeeding.

Note that:

  • Milk production is independent of the size of the breasts.
  • Very liquid and/or yellow milk is equally nutritious than thick and white milk.
  • Breastfeeding is not an effective method for family planning.
  • For milk production the lactating woman only needs to drink liquids: water, fruit juices. Other traditional drinks (panela water with fennel, “ponymalta” and beer) are not necessary.

When the baby pushes, sneezes, hiccups or makes bowel movements after eating. Calm down is normal. If you breastfeed and stop stool for several days, it may also be normal. Make sure you discuss it in consultation. Remember: when you have a kangaroo baby it is better to attend a consultation for nothing serious, than to delay in consulting.

Yes. You have the necessary skills to take care of and raise your baby, you just need a little information, training and time to develop them.

That boy or girl is YOUR baby and you are YOUR family. It is your duty to assume the leading role the baby’s care.

The affection and care your baby requires for its growth and development comes from your family and caregivers; nobody can impersonate them.

Stimulating your baby is a good way to strengthen ties and promote development:

  • Lullaby the baby horizontally, do not shake them so they will remain calm and pleasant.
  • When the mother returns to her work (3 months) and does not stay at home for so long, organize yourselves in such a way that you are able to expend 30 minutes or an hour a day to share, play, talk, stimulate and touch. This is your time and it will be of great help to develop the affective relationship between you and your baby.

Massages are the language of love without words. The technique of massage is not learned or mastered in a single attempt. This will require time and constant practice.

You must be certain of wanting and knowing how to massage your baby, if you are not sure then you can always ask for guidance with the professionals of the Integral Kangaroo Mother Program.

Breastfeeding

In the month of breastfeeding, the Kangaroo Foundation joins all efforts to promote breastfeeding, highlighting Breastfeeding as one of the three fundamental components of the Kangaroo Mother Care Method.

Lets remember its principle: Except in extreme cases (mother’s death, rejection) or if the production of breast milk is insufficient, always give breast milk as the number one option. If maternal feeding is impossible or insufficient, it can be replaced or supplemented with artificial milk adapted to low birth weight babies.

Maternal nutrition is a privilege for several reasons:

  • It is the only nutrition source able to adapt to fragile babies such as low weight  at birth babies.
  • It allows to avoid manipulations and doubtful preparations of artificial milk.
  • It provides important antibodies to low weight at birth babies.
  • It has no cost. Transportation and storage is easy and safe.

Maternal feeding should begin as far as possible as from birth. It is done directly, putting the child to the breast or by manual extraction of the breast milk.

  • To collect, preserve and drink breast milk it is necessary to always use plastic containers since maternal antibodies might be fixed to glass.
  • Do not use bottles or baby pacifiers because they could interfere with the proses of breastfeeding. It is necessary to place frequently the babies on the maternal breast to teach them to suckle and thus stimulate the production of breast milk.
  • Do not use bottles or baby pacifiers because they could interfere with the proses of breastfeeding when a supplement is also being supplied.
  • The supplement is supplied throughout the day, using a teaspoon or a plastic dropper.
  • The complement measurement must be calculated based on a ration greater than 200 cc/kg/day.
  •
